Lescudjack Iron Age hill fort is to be officially handed back to the people of Penzance on the Winter Solstice to mark the revival of the Cornish mid-winter festival of Montol.
A wealth of pagan and Christian traditions are to be blended together in a similar way to the towns mid-summer celebration of
Golowan. The festival of
Montol (Cornish for Winter Solstice) runs from the 15
th to the 22
nd December, and will culminate with the lighting of
the Mock (Cornish Yule log) atop the ancient beacon of
Lescudjack Hill Fort.
A masked candle-lit procession will leave the town centre for the Hill Fort on Solstice eve (21st December) at 6.30pm and will wind its way to the ancient Iron Age hilltop site in the east of the town, overlooking the harbour and Mount's Bay. Further celebrations will be held around the town centre during the evening with mummers plays, Cornish carols and live music. Plus fun and frolicks at the docks around 10.30pm with the
Golowan Band and
Penglaz, the towns Solstice '
Obby '
Oss.
The
festival has been revived to complement the larger and more well known
Golowan festival held around the Summer Solstice. Click the underlined link to view my article about Golowan.
